How we got a blog from 0 to 10,000 organic traffic in 8 months and then sold it to Oberlo [case study]

ProfitIndustry.com (PI) was a blog that reviewed eCommerce platforms to help people start their own ecommerce store online.

Since purchasing the blog, Oberlo rebranded it to Let’s Talk About Money and expanded to cover topics like money making, freelancing and remote working. Later Oberlo redirected most PI pages to relevant articles on Oberlo blog.

The Content Strategy

Early on we focused on 2 types of pages – in-depth individual reviews of ecommerce platforms, and “best ecommerce platform for X” type of pages, with TOP5 specific platforms reviewed. We published a total of 32 articles in one of these two categories.

Some of the first page rankings that we got are displayed below. As you can see there are many queries related to Printify (print on demand platform), as well as Dropified (dropshipping ecommerce platform), Printful (print on demand platform) and Shopify (ecommerce platform).

The Link Strategy

Our main goal was to produce a link magnet asset that would get links on autopilot once it ranks on the first page of Google. Then we could use internal links from this page to spread the link juice throughout the website, helping all other pages to rank as well.

Through a lot of broken link building, niche edits and guest posting, the eCommerce statistics page was pushed to the first page of Google for many relevant terms.

Eventually people started linking to it just because they found the page when searching for ecommerce stats in Google.

This approach helped us acquire links we couldn’t otherwise get, like links from Neil Patel [DR90], SocialBakers [DR82], MeetEdgar [DR77], Keap [DR82] and many other high quality blogs.

Acquisition

When we offered Oberlo to buy the blog, ProfitIndustry was visited 9,514 times in the last 30 days (up ⬆︎26.9% compared to period before that). While the sale was taking place, the site continued to grow, so when it was finally sold in January, the traffic hit 10,000 mark.
